Zulfigar,
Unfortunately for you, if a ethernet frame is "bad" (that is corrupted
by some physical process) then it is unlikely it will be captured by the
packet capture library. Hence ethereal will not know about these
packets. (Other commercial "sniffers" tend to use proprietary
specialised network interfaces that do pass this type of information to
the software sniffer)
An option that I usually use in this case is to use the network
statistics capability in the network equipment. Most "manageable"
hubs/switches in the mid to high-end range, support either basic
ethernet or RMON statistics. These will count errors at the physical
layer, and you can then use this to identify and isolate problem
ports/cabling. You can either view this information through the switch
console or through a SNMP manager (such as HP Openview :-) if it is more
convenient.(If your current network infrastructure doesn't allow this
sort of measurement you could purchase a single switch and insert it
into the network and then test, say, 24 ports at a time).

Subject: [Ethereal-dev] Query
Hi,
Please suggest is there any possibility, by using ethereal we can
monitor problematic network interface cards (eg: generating bad
packets)?
Further, does it cause network congestion, if implemented on permanent
basis?
I will look forward to your kind reply.
Thanks
Regards
