Yes, it is supposed to work.

I also had these messages until I changed the font in the GUI
preferences. You can also specify it on the command line :
ethereal -m "Monospace 8"

I didn't have this problem (I'm running ethereal on a Debian-unstable
distro). Try running pango-querymodules.
