The space between some items can also be made a little smaller. If you
put the taskbar to autohide you can see the buttons. Display options,
name resolution and the checkbox for capture as promiscuous could be
created with a different size (if possible with GTK) and then I suppose
the window might just be small enough to fit on the screen.

I will, but now I have to force my users to use a different interface for
a while.

The plugin abi, or the dissector function parameters, (tvb, pinfo etc) or
proto_item_* functions?
