Richard,

In FreeBSD, GNU make packages/ports has a name "gmake" to distinguish
it from the BSD "make", so you don't have to play with a PATH to
select which flavor of make to use on which occasion. Just grab the
gmake packages/ports and then type gmake. It will build everything
cleanly.
