Disclaimer: I'm not an expert on Postscript, raytracing, graphic design,
etc.

It seems to me that the logo is a problem which is decomposable into
simple subproblems which don't require the full power of a raytracer.
It's time to think component-wise. Let's see how far out on this limb I
can get.

The "e" itself is just an elliptical arc and a stroke, with a certain
thickness and bullet ends. Someone more familiar with the specifics of
Postscript should be able to design quite a simple program to paint it.
This might be useful for other things as well as the chrome logo.

The background is a section of an ellipsoid with shading. It might be
possible to create such a simple figure using techniques that wouldn't
scale to objects of real-world complexity. Similarly the rim is an
elliptical ring with circular cross-section, and again this might yield to
techniques which could be easily programmed in PS. Again, these figures
might be more generally useful.

[waves hands energetically]
Assuming that these pieces can be programmed separately, one need only
superpose the three figures with a common center.
