After applying the patch:

	tooting$ make 2>&1 | tee errs
	cd . && aclocal `./aclocal-flags`
	aclocal: configure.in: 39: macro `AM_GNU_GETTEXT' not found in library

It appears the changes require that the system have GNU "gettext"
installed on it; that's not necessarily going to be the case.
