FYI, he sent me the file.
This was caused by a bug in the SMB dissector, in dissect_transact2_smb().
I might
have a go at tvbuffifying that beast.

you are right. i tried it again on the original capture and it doesn't work.
i think the pb went away because i unchecked the option "capture packets in
promiscuous mode". this must have removed the bad packet causing the pb that
you are talking about.
i attached a zip file with the capture file causing the pb.

That particular display filter doesn't cause my copy of Ethereal on W2k to
crash,
so I suppose that you have a packet that is triggering a bug in a protocol
dissector. If that file doesn't have sensitive information, can you send me
a copy of it so I can reproduce it?
Or, did you find the error log that was supposedly created?

the program crashes.
Message i get in a dialog box:
"ethereal.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows
you will need to restart the program
an error log is being created"
any suggestions ???
