I'm not sure how I stumbled onto ethereal. I know I was looking for a sniffer
similar to snoop, which, with the -v option can take apart many types of
packets. Some of my keywords triggered ethereal, and it was just beautiful.
I had no idea there was that nice of a gui sniffer out there for Unix.

So, now that I had it, and I had source, I decided to write a dissector for
the particular packets I was sniffing (DIAMETER protocol). It took almost
no time (I cloned it from the RADIUS protocol). Since then I've added
preferences (so DIAMETER and RADIUS have configurable ports), and support for
the newest DIAMETER draft.
