Followinng problem arises when compiling the static version of ethereal.
Operating System is HP-UX 10.20:

make ethereal_static

/usr/ccs/bin/ld: (Warning) Unsupported keyword -static to -static option - both ignored

i.e linking doesn't work correctly.
chatr shows the binary NOT linked statically, but rather dynamically.
