It's perfectly legal to say "Copyright (c) 2000" now.  IIRC, you can
post-date a copyright notice by up to one year.  

This is mainly in deference to Real World IP[1] like books, where the
book plates might be created several months in advance of the book's
appearance on store shelves.  Nevertheless, that's the law[2], and we
can take advantage of it.

[1] No, I'm not talking about the Internet Protocol!

[2] In all countries that have signed on to the Universal Copyright
Convention or to the Berne Convention, that is.  Which is probably every
country worth worring about.  See the Copyright FAQ for details:
