This is more of a binary compatability issue. I have a build of ethereal
that works on some machines and not others. It seems to be very
dependent on the particular kernel config it was built with. (It doesn't
detect any interfaces that it can open.) 

Any ideas? 

What is absolutely required on a linux 2.2.x box for libpcap to work?
