As per the mail in another thread, this *appears* to be a problem with
some versions of "make"; we've checked something that appears to be a
fix, and there should soon be an 0.7.7 release with that fix.

Are you certain you were running GNU "make" rather than, say,
"/usr/ccs/bin/make"?  If so, what version of GNU "make" was it?  I've
not seen the bug with the versions of GNU "make" I've used, but I was
able to reproduce it with the Solaris 2.5.1 "/usr/ccs/bin/make" (it was
also seen with Berkeley "make"), but perhaps some other versions cause
the bug to happen.
