Maybe CDP is The Cisco Damn Proprietary protocol :)

BTW: I found a newer version of Physical Toplogy Discovery Protocol:

There are some similarities between those two drafts and the CDP.
Fortunatly I have many differnt ciscos to play with (1600, 2500, 2600, 2820, 2900, 
3600, 4000, 4700, 5200, 7200)
